Vanessa's Action Letter
Vanessa Andrade
May 28, 2016 Addressed to R. Bruce Dold Publisher and Editor-in-chief Chicago Tribune 433 N. Michigan Dear Mr. R. Bruce Dold, My name is Vanessa Andrade and I am a senior at Social Justice High School located in Chicago. Recently I was told I needed to choose an issue in which I’m passionate about. Which meant, I had to conduct research and find a way to take action to benefit the community. The issue I decided to conduct my research was on sea levels rising. I decided to choose this issue because in my honors science research class we had a unit in which we had to choose an issue that was presented in the community that was in relation with global warming. Global warming has been around for centuries and will remain. However, we can prevent global warming by educating ourselves and seeing how it’s being presented in other regions. For example, global warming comes from the Earth’s inability to reduce CO2 levels which is causing the Earth’s atmosphere to become warmer. Therefore, by the Earth’s temperature becoming warmer we are seeing a variety of ways that it’s affecting regions across the globe. According to, National Geographic, scientists stated that rising sea levels have risen year by year since the 1990s. Rising sea levels is caused by human activities, natural activities, but mainly by burning fossil fuels. By the pollutants being released into the air it’s causing the oceans to absorb the heat that is being trapped in the atmosphere. I am concerned with this because it can have impacts on our food chains and on animals. Rising sea levels occurs because of two primary components which are thermal expansion and melting glaciers or ice caps. Thermal expansion is when a body of water gets warm and it multiplies. By the ice caps or ice glaciers diminishing rapidly it’s going to cause the oceans elevation to rise and will put coastal cities at risk. I found out that NASA, has been studying how sea levels have been rising year by year. With that in mind, NASA has been capturing pictures of places especially in the countries that lie next to bodies of water. For example, in Louisiana, most of the Mississippi river is losing ground, yet it isn’t completely disappearing. This is a demonstration of how rising sea levels will end up drowning cities. It may affect coastal cities, but it can also bring climate refugees to the inner states which can lead to overpopulation. Which can lead to shortage of water, oil, food, and other supplies. As a nation, we must protect and set expectations that we want to meet that can benefit the nation now before it’s too late to take action. Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you or a representative of you company. |
